Society (NEWFS)

Vegetation Management Coordinator and concurrent position of Volunteer
Coordinator for
Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE) (2nd posting)

The New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS)is a non-profit organization
dedicated to the conservation
of temperate North American flora through education, research,
horticulture, habitat preservation and
advocacy. Conservation efforts are focused on the New England region,
through numerous grassroots
and collaborative initiatives.

Responsibilities:
Full time, permanent position, responsible for vegetation management and
non-native invasive species
activities. Responsibilities include:
·        Design management plans and implement vegetation management to
control invasive plants
        and/or to benefit rare plant species.
·        Oversee NEWFS initiatives for IPANE including the recruitment,
training and maintenance of
        IPANE volunteers and associated databases.
·        Assist in training and maintenance of Plant Conservation Volunteer
(PCV) Corps.
·        Assume staff responsibility for management of NEWFS Sanctuaries.
·        Collaborate with other NEWFS departments to develop educational
interpretation, develop print
        and web-based informational resources, make formal and informal
presentations, teach courses,
        and write articles.
·        Help procure funding for the above activities.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in botany or related field plus demonstrated experience
in vegetation management and
conservation fieldwork.  Master degree preferred. Working knowledge of
native and invasive plants in
New England is required.  Since the Coordinator will be responsible for
managing many projects, as well
as simultaneously managing large numbers of volunteers, excellent
organizational skills are essential.
Ability to positively interact with and motivate individuals and groups is
imperative.  Must have proven
experience working collaboratively with a team, thinking innovatively, and
communicating effectively, both
verbally and in writing, in formal and informal situations.   Coordinator
must be willing to travel throughout
the New England region.   Must have valid driver’s license and have (or
able to obtain) a pesticide
applicators license in Massachusetts.

Job entails physical effort to perform rare and invasive plant surveys,
habitat management and invasive
 exotic plant control projects, and field trips.  Some heavy lifting is
required, as are long periods of driving.
Weekend work is required as needed, with compensatory leave available.

Salary:  Compensation commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits
package.

2.   COLAP (Congress of Lakes and Ponds) Winter Workshop Call for Papers
(Deadline Extended):

This message is a call for papers (extended deadline).

The 19th Annual COLAP Winter Workshop on Lake and Pond Management and
Restoration is scheduled for
January 21, 20006, from 10am to 5pm.
New location -- Worcester State College, Worcester, Massachusetts.

The overall theme for the plenary session and at least one workshop session
will focus on Dam Issues,
including Beaver Dams, if a speaker can be found.

Speakers sought for the usual Introduction to Lake and Pond Management
Session.
Other topics that members have expressed interest in this year are Algae,
Stormwater Management, Camp Road
Erosion, Watershed Protection through  various means including Zoning,
Creating and Watershed Districts,
Canada Geese.
Other topics not mentioned above may be possible, especially if they are on
timely issues.

There are only a few slots open at this time so contact Carol as soon as
possible if you would like to give a talk.
