Graduate Research Assistantship in Fire and Invasive Plant Management

Department of Forest, Rangeland, and Watershed Stewardship

Colorado State University

Description

A research assistantship is available beginning January 2006 at Colorado State University (CSU) for a student to pursue a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in fire and invasive plant management in the Department of Forest, Rangeland, and Watershed Stewardship (FRWS). The project is a collaborative effort involving the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Park Service, the United States Geological Survey, CSU, and North Dakota State University. The proposed work will allow the National Park Service to enhance land management decisions related to invasive species and fire management. The approach is to utilize existing satellite-based resources to better understand the interaction between fire, burnt area, and invasive species, and then to utilize this understanding to better manage National Park lands in such a way as to respect the natural ecological significance of fire while guarding against alien plant invasion.

Requirements

Successful candidates will meet the graduate program admission requirements and have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. A firm foundation in ecology is a must for this position. Additionally, understanding and application of GIS, remote sensing, fire ecology, and/or invasive plant ecology will enhance a candidate’s success. Information about the FRWS graduate program can be found at: http://www.cnr.colostate.edu/frws/.

The assistantship includes an annual stipend of $15,000 and tuition. This project requires some travel each year to selected NPS lands. These expenses will be covered by the project.

An earlier start date (October 2005 or after) may be possible for motivated candidates.

Application deadline:

Thorough consideration will be given to complete applications received before 1 October 2005 or until the position is filled.
